Everyone has ADHD these days…

I’m sure that’s what it feels like for some people out there.

The rate of adult diagnosis has dramatically increased in the last couple of years and news outlets are eager to report on this “pandemic”.

But guess what! It’s not because:
👎 people are jumping on a trend
👎 smart phones have reduced our ability to focus
👎 there are too many social media posts about it
👎 people are looking for an excuse for their laziness

(all things I’ve heard recently and clearly from people who have no clue!)

Yes, there's a lot of attention being drawn to the symptoms through TikTok and other social media sites, but this is actually a really good thing!

I never would have considered I had ADHD (that’s something that disruptive boys have, isn’t it?!), until I saw a list of symptoms posted by someone who was recently diagnosed.

I hard-related to every single one (except hyperactivity, but little did I know…).

Anyway, it was still a couple of years and a lot(!) of research later that I finally considered speaking to my GP about it and got a very speedy referral.

You see, ADHD is severely under-diagnosed in girls and women, because the symptoms present more subtly than the stereotype (partly due to our ability to mask our differences in order to “fit in”).

So actually, it’s not a case of EVERYONE being diagnosed with ADHD at the moment, but more a case of people FINALLY getting the diagnosis* they need in order to understand themselves better.

It’s important that those of us with a later-life diagnosis continue to talk about it and highlight it, so that others like us recognise the symptoms in themselves and aren’t afraid to seek the support they need!
